# Blocks and sections

> Understand the difference between Account Canvas blocks and sections.

## Blocks

Blocks are individual pieces of content that can be placed in Shopify customer
accounts or reused inside Account Canvas sections and pages.

Launch block types include:

* Announcement banner and announcement bar
* Rich text, image, image banner, image with text, and image collage
* FAQ / help accordion
* Social links
* Link list / shortcut grid
* Button group
* Promo card
* Featured products
* Contact info and contact buttons
* Trust badges and payment icons
* Redirect with countdown
* Fields / custom form
* Customer submission form
* Order items list and order item actions
* Custom order note

## Configure a block well

1. Choose a template for the result you need, not just its preview image.
2. Replace sample text and images with merchant-approved content.
3. Check every primary and secondary button, link, and social profile destination.
4. Use meaningful image alt text. Check wide images and mobile cropping in the live account.
5. Save and activate the content, then save its matching Shopify placement.

Preview labels and sample data can differ from customer-facing output. Always check an actual signed-in customer account, especially when optional fields are blank.

## Sections

Sections are reusable containers. A section can hold multiple blocks and be
placed as a single item in supported customer account locations.

This helps merchants avoid manually placing several separate blocks when they want one complete account experience.

## When to use each

Use a **block** when you need one simple content component.

Use a **section** when you want a group of related blocks to move together, such as a support panel with a banner, FAQ, and contact prompt.

## Static vs admin-managed content

Static Shopify extension blocks can still be configured directly in Shopify's
customer account editor.

Admin-managed blocks and sections are created in Account Canvas. Copy the block
or section ID into the matching Account Canvas customer account location to
render the saved content.

Account Canvas content can be placed across supported customer account
locations, including profile, order index, order status, footer, and
order-related surfaces. Availability depends on the locations enabled for your
store and app version.

Fields and workflow blocks submit to Account Canvas first so the app can keep a
short-lived encrypted operational record. When a published field is configured
with a valid metafield target and the current customer or order owner can be
verified, Account Canvas can also attempt an authorized Shopify metafield write.

Customer submission forms are request-intake workflows. They store the encrypted
submission and can send the merchant a reference-only notification. The email
does not contain the customer's answers or customer/order identifiers.

Order-focused blocks use the Shopify customer account order context when it is
available. If the order context is not available in preview, Account Canvas
shows realistic sample content so merchants can still understand the layout.

Only launch-visible templates appear in the template picker and runtime. Features
that still require a data source, consent mutation, upload system, or additional
security review remain unavailable until they are completed.
